Unlock your potential with Canopy's tailored O Level teaching method crafted to help you excel in every subject

Read on to explore our subject-specific strategies and student support systems.

Physics

Segmented Mastery

The 'O' Level Physics syllabus requires a deep understanding of fundamental theoretical concepts, especially for extremely challenging topics such as Thermal Physics, EMI, and Waves. Without first understanding these topics, it is impossible for students to do problem-solving. A typical Physics class at Canopy will be split into many halves. The first half focuses on conceptual understanding of Question Type A of a topic. The next half moves on to problem-solving, only for Question Type A. This cycle is repeated, allowing a complex topic to be broken down into segments to be separately understood, followed by immediate problem-solving to instil confidence.

Integrated

Mastery

The most challenging questions will surface as hybrid questions, where multiple topics are tested simultaneously in a singular question.

These questions can only be done after the student has a clear understanding of individual topics. We will approach such questions using the same pedagogy. If students are able to do such questions, there is a strong likelihood that he will attain an A in the 'O' Levels.

Chemistry

Conceptual

Understanding

A Level Chemistry is challenging. Students often never make it out of the content mastery stage, finding themselves unable to adapt to application and hybrid questions. Mastery over relevant content for fundamentals such as Chemical Energetics, Bonding, and Rate of Reactions is a prerequisite for students to reach the next level. A typical Chemistry class at Canopy will have multiple tiers. In the first tier, students will gain a conceptual understanding of the topic in the context of examinations. The next tier focuses on a comprehensive framework for that topic, enabling students to recognise the question type, Avoid common mistakes, and solve efficiently.

This cycle is repeated, allowing a complex topic to be broken down into segments tailored by current O-level trends; to be understood, and applied immediately in class.

Intuition through Application

Once students are comfortable with the individual frameworks, they develop an intuition for Chemistry. The last tier is application, where students gain a bird’s eye view of the topic, equipping them to recognise every question type, learn all intersections with other topics, and apply the same frameworks they learned for new contexts.

We will approach such questions using the same pedagogy. If students are able to do such questions, there is a strong likelihood that they will attain an A in the 'O' Levels.

English

Transforming English into a Science

At Canopy, we have invented a truly unique approach to mastering English. The first exposure to English at Canopy always provides a "wow" factor, as they realise that such a difficult subject can actually be easy when tackled in a structured way.

For the essay component, our tutor has created an exhaustive list of different question types that could appear, which will be shared with students. Thereafter, students at Canopy are expected to memorise evaluation strategies crafted by the tutor upon spotting certain question types in their essay question. After exposure to such strategies, students naturally gain confidence in the subject as they immediately know what to write the moment they are able to spot the question type. One example of an essay question type is whether an action is "justified". A possible evaluation strategy that could be memorised by student is weighing the action against the "Principle of LNP", where the justification of the action depends on 1. Legality 2. Necessity 3. Proportionality

One example of a question type in Comprehension is '3 Details Effect'. The approach for such questions will be to 1. State detail found in the passage 2. Paraphrase the detail specifically 3. Link to the question requirement.

Content Mastery

Unlike many other centres, we do not believe in memorising examples or sentence structures in class as it can be done at home. Instead, we provide students with comprehensive content packs filled with examination-ready examples, descriptive essay sentence structures, and formats for situational writing for the student to memorise at their own pace.

These content packs are constantly updated, split into different themes of a topic, and contain essay outlines to showcase how the examples can be applied for different points. In class, Canopy's English tutor focuses on content mastery with the same pedagogy of teaching English as a Science. Every theme in a topic comes with evaluation strategies to be memorised by students.

For example, theme 1 of Politics is "Power of Governance". An evaluation strategy that can be applied for most essays under theme 1 is the "Broken Window Theory". The theory suggests that visible signs of signs of crime, antisocial behavior and civil disorder create an urban environment that encourages further crime and disorder, including serious crimes. Using this theory helps students explain the rationale behind harsh government actions if the action is done to curb a constellation of other consequences that may occur. A similar pedagogy is applied for every component of English as well.

A & E

Math

Topical Framework

The tutor will first ensure students grasp the fundamental concepts of 'O' Level Additional Mathematics. Each lesson starts with an overview of subtopics that could be tested in the 'O' Level within a particular topic. Through engaging examples and memorable analogies, our tutor ensures students truly understand the material. After understanding, our tutor provides straightforward, step-by-step frameworks for different question types, empowering students to approach problems independently with confidence.

Skills Mastery

Getting an A in the O-Level examinations require application of concepts from different topics in a singular question. Our tutor guides students on how to  break down such complex questions through the step-by-step frameworks previously learnt, facilitating easier problem-solving.

As Mathematics is a practice-intensive subject, Canopy's Mathematics tutor is always seen giving consultations outside of class.

We recognize the importance of providing tailored support to students in all subjects, including English, Physics, Chemistry, and A/E Mathematics. Our tutoring approach aligns with each student's school curriculum to ensure they stay ahead. For all subjects, our tutors offer free consultations outside of class, encouraging students to practice independently and get prompt answers to their questions. At Canopy, students have dedicated tutors guiding them through every step of their 'O' Level journey.

We also offer personalized help for all subjects.
